When policies prioritize accessibility, equity, and dignity, they create opportunities for Autistic individuals to live, learn, work, and participate fully in their communities. Protecting Access and Advocating for Evidence-Based Research

The Autism Society of America and our nationwide network of affiliates work together to champion change that empowers the Autism community through state and federal public policy. During Autism Acceptance Month, we recognize the importance of advancing policies that promote inclusion, respect, and meaningful support for Autistic individuals and their families. The Autism Society focuses on advocating to protect access to critical services and supports, promote evidence-based research and respectful language, and ensure strong protections under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Advocating for Equitable HealthCare, Education, Employment, and Community Living

Across the country, the Autism Society continues to advocate for policies that promote equitable access to healthcare, education, employment, and community living. Through collaboration with policymakers, partners, and self-advocates, we work to ensure that laws and programs reflect the real needs and lived experiences of the Autism community.

Strengthening Programs Supporting Autistic Individuals Across the Lifespan

At the federal level, the Autism Society engages with Congress and federal agencies to protect and strengthen programs that support Autistic individuals across the lifespan. This includes safeguarding the implementation of IDEA, advancing policies that expand access to community-based services and supports, and supporting continued federal coordination and investment in Autism research.

Partnering with the Autism Community

We work alongside partners to elevate the voices of Autistic individuals and families in policy discussions, emphasizing the importance of respectful, strengths-based language and policies that recognize the diversity of the Autism community. Advocacy is most effective when the people it impacts are meaningfully represented at the table.

Advancing Legislation at the State Level

At the state level, Autism Society affiliates play a vital role in advancing legislation that improves access to services, protects against discrimination, and strengthens community supports and safety. From expanding employment initiatives to reinforcing disability rights protections, our nationwide network continues to drive meaningful change in communities across the country.
