May 16, 2025, Rockville, MD — The Autism Society of America today announced that Christopher Banks, President and Chief Executive Officer since 2020, will step down from his role effective July 4, 2025, as he pursues his next professional opportunity. After five and a half years of dedicated leadership and service, Chris has decided that this is the right time to pass the baton—following the celebration of the Autism Society’s 60th anniversary and the completion of our current strategic plan—as the organization looks ahead to its next chapter.
Mr. Banks tenure has been marked by both great accomplishments and unprecedented challenges. He provided steady leadership through the uncertainties of the Covid-19 pandemic. Under his guidance, the Autism Society launched and implemented its strategic plan, Our Vision, Our Future, which laid the foundation for key organizational advancements.
“I am thankful to the Board of Directors for the opportunity to lead this extraordinary organization,” said Christopher Banks. “Together, we rebranded the Autism Society, established the Autism Justice Center, launched the Safety on the Spectrum™ initiative, and secured the largest grant in the organization’s history to advance our Health Equity work.”
“Chris has been a passionate advocate for the Autism community and has played a vital role in expanding the Autism Society’s national presence, strengthening our affiliate network, and guiding the organization through a transformative period of growth,” said Tracey Staley, Chair of the Board of Directors. “We are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and commitment Chris devoted to advancing our mission, and we wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”
As the Autism Society enters its next strategic planning phase, this transition marks a meaningful opportunity to reflect on its progress and prepare for the next chapter of impact. Throughout this transition, the Autism Society’s mission remains steadfast—to create connections and ensure that everyone in the Autism community has access to the resources needed to live fully.
